Bundle Up

Each version of Visual Basic bundles new controls, but the folks at APEX can still manage to bring in controls that make my programming eyes grow wider. APEX has been a vendor who has consistently added value, and here they are again with another new set of tools. True DBList Pro 5.0 upgrades the VB 4 and 5 DBList and DBCombo controls by supporting everything in the originals, as well as adding layout and several dozen other cool, new additions to their bundle .

On Purpose

The standard VB DBList control is a single column data-aware list box with no formatting. True DBList Pro 5.0 supercharges the standard by adding multi-column support, Excel- and Word-like style sheets to define graphical elements such as columns and rows collectively, or on a cell by cell basis. The provision for splits (as well as fixed columns) makes True DBList Pro 5.0 work as a grid control but with the lightweight requirements of a list. And support for objects, such as checkboxes within cells, makes it easy to create checklist elements that provide more pleasant cues (such as checked items rather than the multiple selections commonly known in listboxes). Bitmaps such as smiley and sad faces can be used to replace boring old option buttons. These elements can be tied to the database so a smiley/sad face in the interface represents a Yes/No field in the database — much more fun!

Do the Combo

The Combo box in True DBList Pro 5.0 shares all the same data presentation and customizability features in the List box, and includes an editable text box that provides incremental search and automatic completion. It also includes a NotInList event that allows new items to be added to the list portion of the Combo.

My Favorite

Even though these controls are named after database access, they don''t have to be used as such. The support for Microsoft''s data control guidelines certainly allows for data bound use. But the other three methods really add pizzazz. My favorite data access method is unbound because it gives me more control over code and the implementation is really easy to use. Support for APEX''s custom XArray control included with the package also offers options for custom database formats.
