Detailed Product Description
Doing Your Chores
Finding an elegant solution to a difficult programming problem is a moment I always savor. But much of my time is usually spent writing repetitive database code, then tortuously debugging it. Thankfully, CodeAssist gave me a way to let the computer do the teeth-gritting grunt work. Computers are better at that anyway.Hands-on Programming
When I tried code generators in the past, I found I didn't like the results and didn't save much time. CodeAssist blew away these problems because it uses a flexible, template-based system of generating code, so I maintained complete control. CodeAssist also comes with whole libraries of pre-tested code templates, including Active Server Pages, HTML/CGI, SQL, Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) and the different data access dialects of Visual Basic, including ADO. They saved me a lot of time. It was easy to use the templates, and if I didn't like one, I could easily edit it, or even write my own from scratch.Work Smarter Not -- Well, You Know
CodeAssist generates clean, useful code using SmartFields that intelligently fill in database information. It can insert names of database objects, perform loops, format code and do other useful tricks. Just browsing through the included templates was enough to show me how it works, and the built-in editor even had AutoComplete.Don't Lose It -- Re-Use it!
The way CodeAssist handled my existing databases was smart, simple and effective. I added Microsoft Access & SQL, Sybase SQL and Oracle 8 data sources to CodeAssist's workspace. Database contents showed up in a neat hierarchical view, but I wasn't locked in to using existing database structures. Instead, I used fields from multiple tables and queries to quickly build logical Data Objects using drag-and-drop. The Data Objects are what links it all together. They are groups of fields that model the data structure of your application. You can re-use a Data Object many times to generate as many different types of code as you need. No more coding the same data structures over and over for different modules, programs or languages!Code All Over the Place
Once it was all set up, I just sat back and my computer does the tedious stuff faster than I ever could. I had control over just about every aspect of the process: which Data Objects and templates were used, how many of each, and where the code ended up. When I ran CodeAssist as a VB add-in, it put the generated code right into my VB project. When I reviewed all my “hard work” I didn't find a single typo, missing comma, or a field name out of place. Amazing! CodeAssist freed me to move on to other types of programming -– the kind humans do better than machines.CodeAssist 1.1
